Meet the Face Behind Fullerton Photography Wedding Photography

I’m Doug Fullerton, the proud owner of Fullerton Photography Wedding Photography.

I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

If you had asked me years ago what I saw myself specializing in, shooting weddings professionally would have been the last thing on my mind. That’s because I assumed that my career path would be different.

However, I started gaining an interest in photography during my architectural studies at the University of Detroit Mercy. Several friends of mine kindled this interest through mutually attended events. I eventually received so many compliments on my photography skills, that I wondered if photography was really my calling. The more people indicated that the scenes I was capturing were really influencing, the more drawn I became to photography as a profession. In fact, the moment I got a taste of wedding photography, upon suggestions from friends, I was hooked, and the rest was history.

Today, I’ve been shooting as Fullerton Photography LLC for just over ten years, and I am so amazed at how the time flies when you’re having fun! During the last decade, I’ve even dabbled into other areas, like computer repair and self-building, for nearly as long. I have devoted these efforts to a simple site named Data Dynamics LLC for about eight or so years, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished through it.

Not too long ago, I used to be a member of Quixtar and Amway. While that vehicle was not the right business for me, I still like to think back to the friends I made, the quality perspectives I saw, and the business I learned, as I had no business education of my own. But as those businesses were focused on sales, and my focus was on people and experiences, I decided to quit.

Apart from sales, I also worked retail at a (now defunct) general goods merchandise company for three to four years when younger. This, again, was a great learning experience in the challenges of the retail environment. Other broader family endeavors included a focus on restaurants, lawn care, and different service-oriented professions. I like to believe that my association with these different service areas has positively influenced my business efforts.

When I look back on my journey as a photographer, I realize that my success so far has mostly been the result of confidence and a more significant portfolio to back up the talk. Back when I first started, and even now, I’ve managed to remain as a single person LLC with an assistant or two (none full-time). I work on my own as it enables me to focus on the business and operate with efficiency. I took the time up front to make sure my contracts and business structure worked well and were valid. Similarly, I devised a workflow that suited me well, and I follow it even today.

Apart from my personal efforts, the kind words of encouragement from friends and family that helped me get started have kept me motivated throughout the years. But, it’s positive reviews from my clients that have really helped me thrive.

When you have one wedding client refer you to three or four friends looking for a photographer, you know they are happy with your service. To ensure my clients through satisfaction, I build a connection with them to think from a personal perspective. Similarly, I do my best to maintain open communication, display a positive demeanor, and be kind to my clients no matter what.

As a professional wedding photographer, besides getting to do what I love, I also receive the freedom of time. I get to choose if I want to work today or not and be my own boss. That doesn’t mean there is no urgency to deliver when I have a contract. As I said, to stay successful, I need to keep my clients happy. And to do this, I need to work hard and exceed expectations.

In my line of work, I also love interacting on a personal level with brides and grooms as it helps me understand their expectations. But, it’s the rare moments during a schedule-based wedding that allow me to see my clients smile and love each other. I admire these moments as they are special and intimate, and capturing them for my clients makes me really happy.

My biggest achievements as a professional photographer are exceeding a hundred wedding shoots, being published in a few places, both small and large, and taking on different photography types outside of weddings and succeeding in those as well.

My success over the years has instilled in me more confidence in my future. They have even served as motivation to think outside the box, especially during these difficult times.

When I’m not taking photographs, I love to game. I’m a huge gaming fan, and occasionally I enjoy a console, but I mainly prefer “PCMR” now. I raid in a few different MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online) and play a handful of various titles. Aside from that, conventions or ren-fair, reading tech articles, and PC oriented activities take up a considerable chunk of my free time.

I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
